The Portland Jewish Academy (PJA) Aftercare Program is looking for individuals passionate about helping children thrive while engaging them in play and building strong community relationships. We are looking for creative, fun loving people to join us and stay through the school year. We are looking for a diverse group of people working collaboratively to provide excellent care for school aged children.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW: We create an atmosphere where children can socialize, prosper, learn and enjoy themselves. JOB SUMMARY: The Afterschool Teacher is responsible for the direct care and supervision of youth in PJA before and afterschool programs. This position provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, social and emotional development of students in an afterschool setting.

Classroom Instruction: With support from a team, plan and implement developmentally appropriate daily curriculum in accordance with PJA-Afterschool Department policies.

Classroom Management: Monitor youth and afterschool spaces to ensure safe participation.

Collaboration and Communication: Work collaboratively and communicate courteously and effectively with the teaching team, parents, students and the public.

Professional Development: Obtain 18 clock hours of professional development through attendance at workshops, seminars, trainings and conferences. The department will provide some of this training, and you will be eligible for hourly pay and reimbursement.

QUALIFICATIONS: • High School Diploma or GED (Required) • Minimum 18 years of age. (Required for Teacher & Head Teacher only) • Ability to successfully enroll in the Oregon Central Background Registry (Required) • At least 1 year experience working with elementary school age children, ages 5 to 12; qualifying education, or a combination of experience and qualifying education. • Ability to work with passion, energy and enthusiasm; communicate clearly and positively with children and adults; work under pressure in noisy and chaotic environments; supervise youth ages 5-12 • Ability to obtain and/or maintain the following with the first 30 days of employment: Child and Adult First Aid/CPR certification, Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect, Introduction to Child Care Health and Safety and Food Handlers Certification.
